Ty phoned Lauren bright and early on Sunday morning.
Lauren thought her brother would just repeat his dinner invitation, but it was a rainy day and perfect weather to continue her decluttering plan. She was already working on the closet. The red dress was hanging in the bathroom, in the Undecided zone.
It did matter that Kyle liked it, even though it shouldnât.
âTaking on Momâs habit?â she asked by way of answer. âIt is the stroke of eight.â
Ty chuckled. âIt ends up being a house rule,â he acknowledged easily.
âI havenât changed my mind about coming out today. Thanks for the invite, but I have a lot to do.â
âThatâs not why Iâm calling.â
Lauren frowned at his serious tone. âWhatâs wrong?â
âMaybe nothing.â Ty was being cautious, which was never a good sign. âI just wanted to see if you were okay.â
âFine. Great. Grandma Trixie has mermaid hair and it looks awesome on her. Alfred will either be dazzled or heâll run, which is pretty much her plan.â
âAlfred?â
âA lovely gentleman who is circling.â Ty chuckled at that and Lauren heard Shannyn say something in the background. âYou obviously have other things to do. Whatâs up?â
âSorry. I donât mean to pry...â
Oh, that didnât sound promising. âBut you will.â Lauren folded her arms across her chest. âGo ahead. Spit it out.â
âMaybe you know already.â
âI donât think I do.â
âMark went to F5F Friday night to pick a fight with Kyle.â
âOh no!â Lauren sat down hard. âWere either of them hurt?â
âMostly their pride. I hear that Kyle was punched in the nose.â
âI doubt that Mark walked away unscathed.â
âNo. But the thing is that he accused Kyle of breaking up your marriage so that he could sleep with you.â
âAh.â
âAnd Kyle pretty much admitted that he was sleeping with you, which means heâs breaking a promise to me to leave my sisters alone.â
Lauren bristled. âAnd so you, as my big brother and morality cop, are calling to tell me to cease and desist from any intimate activities with Kyle?â
âYouâre offended.â He sounded taken aback. Lauren heard Shannyn say âI told you so,â which just made her like her sister-in-law-to-be even more.
âYou bet Iâm offended,â Lauren replied. âWho I do, and when and where and why, is really none of your business, Tyler.â
âI just donât want to see you get hurt.â
âWell, itâs a bit late for that. In case you missed the memo, my husband had sex with someone else outside the restrooms at F5F.â
âI canât believe I let Kyle tell you about that. I should have guessed...â
âBecause Kyle would only offer to be the bearer of bad news if weâd been intimate? Ty! He was being a friend.â
âLauren, I just know how Kyle is...â
âAnd so do I, thank you very much. You had no business insisting that he make some promise to you about your sisters.â
âWell...â
âAnd it makes no difference anyway because I called him.â
âThatâs what he said. But why?â
âBecause I know how he is!â Lauren could tell that Tyler was astonished and she felt a little bit of compassion for him.
